Important note for Charles Oliveira … or any other professional athlete for that matter:
If you suffer any injuries to the thoracic cavity in training, GO SEE A DOCTOR. Immediately. And whatever you do, don’t ever compete in a mixed martial arts (MMA) match without medical clearance.
Oliveira suffered what was originally diagnosed a “torn esophagus” little more than 90 seconds into his main event bout against Max Holloway at UFC Fight Night 74, which took place last Sunday night (Aug. 23, 2015), and was eventually removed from the Octagon on a stretcher.
It was a scary moment (watch it here).
“Do Bronx” got some much-needed good news today from physicians in Saskatoon, Canada, however, who were treating the Brazilian Featherweight — and likely performing a battery of medical tests — for the past 48 hours.
UFC.com has the update:
“UFC featherweight Charles Oliveira has been released from medical care in Saskatoon today and will be traveling home tomorrow. Preliminary test results for major chest, neck or throat injuries were negative and Oliveira will have a follow up appointment with his local physician upon returning home. Oliveira is in good spirits and appreciates the support he’s received from his fans during this time.”
Oliveira has already requested a rematch against “Blessed” because “there was no fight.” Unfortunately for him, Holloway has seemingly already moved on, eyeing a fight against Frankie Edgar — or any other top-ranked 145-pound contender — as soon as possible.
