After a shocking injury to Charles Oliveira in the main event of UFC Fight Night 74 this past Sunday night (August 23, 2015), rising UFC featherweight contender Max Holloway was gifted his seventh straight victory, putting him in line for a No. 1 contender fight. Could Frankie Edgar be next for the Hawaiian?
When Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) announced Max Holloway would be taking on Charles Oliveira in the main event of UFC Fight Night 74, fight fans around the globe eagerly awaited what could very well have been the “Fight of the Year.”
Unfortunately, mixed martial arts (MMA) fans were left with an incredibly anti-climactic bout on FOX Sports 1 this past Sunday night (Aug. 23, 2015), as Oliveira suffered a micro-tear in his esophagus just one minute and 39 seconds into the fight.
More on the Brazilian’s injury here.
The final sequence was essentially the only action of the entire fight, as “Do Bronx” shot in for a takedown that was stuffed hard against the cage by Holloway. When Oliveira got to his feet, he clutched his right shoulder in agony, and Herb Dean immediately called a stop to the bout.
Check out the highlights here.
While Holloway’s celebration may have been a bit excessive, he was ultimately determined the victor, and improved his UFC win streak to seven in a row.
Currently sitting at No. 5 in the featherweight rankings (see them here), Holloway would like to see former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar staring across the cage from him in his next bout.
Speaking with Jon Anik in his post-fight interview, the always-humble Holloway called for UFC matchmakers to schedule the inaugural UFC Hawaii event this coming January, featuring a No. 1 contender’s fight pitting “Blessed” against “The Answer.”
From UFC.com:
“I think Frankie [does] deserve a shot [at the title]. But if he isn’t going to fight for the title soon, then – I don’t know what the UFC wants to do, but let’s go to UFC Hawaii. Dana White, Sean Shelby make it happen. Me and Frankie Edgar, I guarantee we can sell it out down there.”
It didn’t take long for Edgar to respond on Twitter, noting his desire to fight at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 22 Finale in Las Vegas, Nevada.
I got called out by max holloway and Jeremy Stephens. I will fight either on dec 11 Let’s make it happen @danawhite @lorenzofertitta @ufc
— Frankie Edgar (@FrankieEdgar) August 24, 2015
The ball is now in Joe Silva’s court, and you should expect to see Holloway and Edgar squaring off very soon inside the Octagon, with a shot at featherweight gold potentially on the line.
